WinRAR Errors: CRC Failed, Corrupt Archive and Forgotten Password

- A CRC failed message means the data does not match what was stored, so the file may be corrupt.
- First update WinRAR, then try the repair command, which works only if the archive has a recovery record.
- Re-download the archive if it is incomplete or damaged.
- WinRAR's maker says a forgotten RAR password cannot be recovered except by brute force.
You try to extract a file and see "CRC failed" or "the archive is corrupt". Do not delete everything yet. This guide explains the most common causes and the fixes that WinRAR's own help pages describe. For the basics, see our WinRAR guide.
Sources and accuracy
We read WinRAR's help page about the CRC failed error and the RARLAB note on lost passwords (October 2026). Some other help pages only list titles, so we do not describe fixes for other errors in detail. Repair is not guaranteed.
What does CRC failed mean?
CRC is a check that tells WinRAR whether data matches what was stored. If it fails, the file inside may be damaged.
WinRAR's page lists two causes:
- Damage after creation: the archive got corrupted later. If it has a recovery record, repair may work.
- Damage during creation: hardware faults, usually an overclocked CPU or unreliable memory, corrupted the data when the archive was made. A recovery record will not fix this.
Steps to try
- Update WinRAR. Download the latest version from the official page and try again.
- Download the archive again. Incomplete downloads are a common cause (this is our general advice, not a quote from the help page). Compare the size with the source.
- Try repair. Open the archive in WinRAR and use the repair command. WinRAR says this works only if a recovery record was included. Then test the repaired archive, since that is the only way to know whether it helped.
- Ask the sender to recreate it. If it was made on a faulty system, the files may need to be recreated after the hardware is stabilized.
- Multi-volume archives: WinRAR has a separate page for "Packed Data CRC failed in volume". Make sure every part is present and complete.
Wrong or forgotten password
WinRAR's help lists questions about wrong passwords and about recovery. RARLAB states there is no way to recover a forgotten RAR password other than brute force, that the encryption has no backdoor and that WinRAR does not support password-cracking tools. If the password is lost, the files may not be retrievable at all. Ask the person who made the archive, check your password manager or look for the password in the message that came with it.
Prevent problems
- Add a recovery record when creating important archives (the option is in the archive settings; wording may vary).
- Test archives after creating them.
- Keep another copy of important files.
- Download from trusted sources only.
Frequently asked questions
Does repair always work? No. It needs a recovery record and may still fail.
Is my PC broken if I see CRC failed? Not necessarily. Most cases are damaged downloads.
Can WinRAR crack a password? No. RARLAB says it does not support such tools.
