WinRAR Guide: Download, Extract, Create and Protect Archives

What WinRAR does

RARLAB describes WinRAR as an archive manager. It can back up data, shrink email attachments, open and unpack RAR, ZIP and other downloaded files (for example CAB and GZIP) and create new RAR and ZIP archives. It can also encrypt archives.

Which version and licence?

When we checked, the download page listed WinRAR 7.23 as the release and 7.30 beta 1 as a beta. Beginners should choose the release. The official site says you can try WinRAR before you buy, and the download page lists the Windows and command-line builds under a Trial license. It does not spell out the trial terms on that page, so read the official licence details. We do not list prices because they change.

RAR for Android is listed as free on the download page and has a Google Play listing. Command-line RAR is offered for Linux, FreeBSD and macOS.

Download safely

Open rarlab.com and go to the Download page.
Choose the installer for your Windows type (64-bit or ARM64).
Avoid "free full version" or "crack" sites. They are a common way to spread malware.
Run the installer and follow the prompts.

Open and extract an archive

From WinRAR's help page, you can open an archive by double-clicking it (if WinRAR is associated), dragging it onto WinRAR, using the Wizard, or right-clicking and choosing Open with WinRAR. Then:

Select the files you want, or all of them.
Click Extract To and choose a destination folder.
Click OK and wait for the progress window.

Many installations also add right-click choices such as extracting here or into a folder. The official page we read mentions only Open with WinRAR and Extract To, so labels may differ on your PC.

Create an archive

Select files or a folder in File Explorer, right-click and choose the WinRAR option to add to an archive (wording depends on the version).
Choose RAR or ZIP. ZIP is easier to open on other computers.
Optionally set a password, name the archive and click OK.

Passwords

RARLAB's page states that a forgotten RAR password cannot be recovered except by brute force, that RAR encryption has no backdoor and that lost-password files may not be retrievable at all. Save the password in a trusted place.

Safety habits

Only open archives from sources you trust.
Scan downloads with your security software.
Be careful with archives that contain .exe files.
Keep WinRAR updated from the official site.
