Google Storage Full? What Counts and How to Free Space

What counts toward storage
A personal account gets up to 15 GB shared across Drive, Gmail, WhatsApp backups on Android and Google Photos. Items in Gmail Spam and Trash, Drive Trash and Photos Trash use space until permanently deleted. If you stay over quota for two years, Google says content may be deleted. For Drive for desktop, only files you own count.
What does not count
Files synced to your computer by Drive for desktop use your computer's disk. Items backed up in High quality or Express before 1 June 2021 do not count toward storage, according to Google's Photos help.
Check what uses the space
- In Drive, open Storage from the left menu. Files are listed from largest to smallest.
- Visit one.google.com/storage/management to manage backups and storage.
- In Gmail, search for large attachments with
has:attachment larger:10M.
Free up space safely
- Quick fix: empty Trash and Spam in Gmail, Drive and Photos, then delete one or two large emails. Wait about 30 minutes before a deeper cleanup.
- Find duplicates: Drive has no automatic finder. Sort by name and look for "(1)" or "Copy of".
- Clear other storage: delete device backups you no longer need on the storage management page and remove hidden app data from Drive settings under Manage apps.
- Shrink WhatsApp backups: turn off "Include videos" in WhatsApp's chat backup settings first, then delete old backups in Google. Google notes backups not updated for five months may be removed automatically.
- Buy more: Google One adds storage. Compare the current price in your country first.
Before deleting anything important, make sure you have another copy. Trash emptying is permanent.
