Google Photos Guide: Backup, Search, Storage and Privacy
Key takeaways
  • Google Photos can automatically back up your photos and videos to your Google Account when backup is turned on.
  • Backup uses your Google Account storage, which is shared with Drive and Gmail. A personal account gets up to 15 GB.
  • Deleted items stay in the trash for a limited time, so check the trash quickly if you delete something by mistake.
  • Some features, such as Face Groups, are not available in every region or account type.

Google Photos is a photo and video app that can store your pictures in your Google Account, so they are not tied to one phone. Many people only notice it when the phone is full or a photo goes missing. This guide explains the main parts in plain language: backup, quality options, storage, deleting and restoring, finding photos and privacy.

Sources and accuracy

We read Google's official Photos Help Center pages in October 2026. Where a page only gave steps for Android, we say so. Menu names, features and limits change by app version, device, country and account type, so always compare with the official page if something looks different. We did not run any tests and we do not describe hands-on results.

What Google Photos does

  • Backs up photos and videos from your device to your Google Account when backup is on.
  • Lets you view that library in the app and at photos.google.com.
  • Offers editing tools such as crop, filters and markup, plus a Magic Eraser tool on supported devices.
  • Groups photos of the same person or pet if Face Groups is available to you and turned on.

Turn on backup (Android)

According to Google's help page, the steps on Android are:

  1. Open Google Photos and sign in.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial at the top right.
  3. Tap Photos settings, then Backup.
  4. Turn Backup on.

The page gave steps only for Android. On iPhone and iPad the screens differ, so use Google's iPhone help page. A common wish is to see whether a photo is safe: tap your profile picture and look for Backup complete. See our guide on backup settings and fixing a stuck backup.

Backup quality options

Google lists these upload options (you change them in settings at photos.google.com on a computer):

Option What it means
Original quality Keeps the original resolution. Counts toward your storage.
Storage saver Slightly reduces quality. Counts toward your storage. Photos above 16 MP are resized to 16 MP and videos above 1080p to 1080p.
Express Reduces quality more to save mobile data. Shown only in some countries or regions. Photos above 3 MP become 3 MP and videos above 480p become 480p.

Items backed up in High quality or Express before 1 June 2021 do not count toward storage, according to Google.

How much storage do you get?

A personal Google Account includes up to 15 GB, and that space is shared by Google Photos, Drive and Gmail. When your account is full, Google says you cannot upload to Drive, send or receive email or back up photos. Content can be deleted if the account stays over quota for two years. Our storage guide explains how to see what is using the space.

Deleting and restoring photos

  • A backed-up item you delete stays in the trash for 30 days, per Google's page about deleted items. Another Google page says a backed-up item can be restored if it was moved to the trash less than 60 days ago. Because these two statements differ, check the current "Restore recently deleted photos & videos" page and act quickly.
  • After the time limit, or after you empty the trash, items are permanently deleted and cannot be restored.
  • Deleting from Google Photos also removes the item from your device and from other devices that have backup on.

Step-by-step recovery is in our restore guide.

Free up space on your phone

On Android, Google Photos has a Free up space on this device option under your profile picture. Google warns that it deletes copies from your device after they are backed up. The originals stay in your Google Photos library. Photos newer than 30 days may be kept on the device. Make sure backup has finished before you use it.

Find photos

You can label a face group with a name so that you can search for it. If you label a group as "Me", you can search "me" to find your photos, according to Google. Face Groups is not available in all regions, domains or account types. If you turn it off, Google says you delete your face groups, face models and face labels.

Privacy points

  • Face labels are private to you, even if you share photos. Face groups are not shared when you share photos.
  • Merging face groups cannot be undone.
  • Check each album's sharing settings before sending a link.
  • Backed-up photos can be viewed on any device where you sign in to your account, so protect your Google Account with a strong password and 2-Step Verification.
  • Google says your content may be deleted after two years of inactivity.

Common problems

Backup is stuck. Check Wi-Fi, free account storage and battery restrictions. See the backup guide.

I cannot find a deleted photo. Look in Collections, then Trash, and also in your device's gallery app trash.

My storage is full. Delete unneeded items from Photos, Drive and Gmail, and empty trash in each.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Photos free? The app is free to use. Storage is limited to 15 GB per personal account, shared across Google services. More storage is sold by Google.

Does deleting a photo in Google Photos delete it from my phone? Yes, according to Google's page, it also deletes it from your device and from other devices with backup on.

Can I get back a permanently deleted photo? Google says permanently deleted items cannot be restored.

Does Express quality exist everywhere? No, it appears only in some regions.

More in Mobile Apps.

Conclusion

Turn on backup, check that it finished, watch your shared storage and treat the trash as a short safety net. If a feature looks different on your phone, trust the current official help page.
