Google Photos Backup Not Working? Settings and Fixes

- Backup status is shown under your profile picture, for example Backup complete or Backup is off.
- A stuck backup is often caused by battery optimization, no Wi-Fi, mobile data limits or a full Google Account.
- Google's backup page gave steps for Android only. iPhone screens are different.
- Backup uses your shared Google storage unless your upload quality is exempt.
You took photos all week, but they are not showing up on your other devices. Usually backup is off, paused or blocked by a setting. This guide follows Google's Android help page and shows how to check each part. For the big picture, read our Google Photos guide.
Sources and accuracy
Source: Google Photos Help Center, "Back up photos & videos" (read October 2026). The page covers Android. Names may differ on your phone brand, and iPhone steps are on a separate Google page. We did not test this ourselves.
Turn on backup
- Open Google Photos and sign in.
- Tap your profile picture or initial (top right).
- Tap Photos settings, then Backup.
- Turn Backup on.
To back up a single photo, open it and tap Back up now. For several items, touch and hold them and tap Back up.
Check the backup status
Tap your profile picture. You should see either Backup complete or Backup is off. At the top of your library you may see states such as Preparing backup, Backing up photos, Backup paused or Backup complete. For one item, tap it, then More, then About and look under Details.
Thumbnail icons, according to Google:
- Empty thumbnail: backed up.
- Cloud with a slash: not backed up and nothing pending.
- In Queue or Paused: will back up later.
- Permanent failure: the item failed.
Fix a stuck or paused backup
1. Check battery restrictions. Google advises turning off battery optimization for Photos. In Settings search for "battery optimization", open Battery optimization, choose All apps, select Photos and tap Don't optimize. On some phones, touch and hold the Photos app, tap Info and under Manage battery usage choose Unrestricted.
2. Check your connection. If you cannot reach Wi-Fi, tap Turn on mobile data in the backup status. Under Backup, then Mobile data usage, you can set a daily limit and switch off Back up videos over data or Back up while roaming. Mobile data may cost money, so check your plan.
3. Check storage. If you see Not enough storage to back up, your Google Account is full. Storage is shared with Drive and Gmail. Free space or buy more. See our storage guide.
4. Wait. Google notes that backup can take a while depending on your connection and the upload size.
Choose the right quality
Backup quality (Original quality, Storage saver and Express where available) is set at photos.google.com/settings. Storage saver resizes photos above 16 MP and videos above 1080p. Details are in the main guide.
